Safeguarding the holiday and leisure region in the high Alps

Enormous pioneering spirit and awareness of the possibilities offered by tourism led to the opening of the first glacier skiing terrain in Austria more than 30 years ago. It was obvious very early on that an intact environment and a beautiful scenery are the biggest assets. Protective environmental measures were thus put in place.

Water and Effluent treatment

Water in the surrounding area of the glacier cable car is prepared via UV treatment instead of dubious ozone plants. Already in 1974 a sewage canal was installed from 2,450 m altitude down to the municipal sewage treatment system in the valley. The sludge from the glacier sewage plant is collected and transported in containers to the Alpincenter to be fed into the sewage system there.

With the rebuild of the glacier cable railway Kaprun 1 into a highly modern 8-seater single cable train, the Langwiedboden area too was connected to the existing canal system. For this section alone ATS 5 million were invested.

Electricity supplies with solar power and energy recycling

In the whole of the Kitzsteinhorn region no fossil fuels are used. All lifts and cable cars are powered by electricity for which 7 km of high-voltage cables were laid.

On the roof of the Alpincenter 24 m² of solar panels store the heat from the sun in the glacier and support, in this way, the hot water supply of our restaurants. Energy recycling of the high powered motors which run the large lifts heats the buildings in the Alpincenter and the lift building at the base of the Panoramabahn.

Waste separation and waste avoidance comes naturally

For many years now the Kaprun Glacier Lift company has carefully sorted any waste from the trains and lifts, the restaurants and offices. With our motto of "Rather avoiding than separating waste" we ask suppliers to avoid unnecessary packaging and to change over to recyclable materials. Daily supplies for the restaurants arrive in reusable containers. No drink cans are sold in the restaurants and shops. Any spray bottles used for checking and repairing technical instruments and machinery are reused. CF-Gas has been replaced by pressurised air. For any correspondence, letterheads etc. only chlorine-free bleached paper is used.

Ski bus service

From autumn to spring ski busses collect skiers and other guests from the many stops in the village and deliver them to the skiing areas at the Kitzsteinhorn and Maiskogel. The busses are comfortable and free of charge. During the skiing season busses between Kitzsteinhorn-Kaprun and Zell am See can also be used free of charge.

Examplary planting vegetation on the high alpine slopes

In cooperation with the Institute of Ecology in Salzburg, Gletscherbahnen Kaprun is working on the renaturation and planting vegetation of the high alpine slopes. Slopes are covered with topspoil material and vegetated with a special seed method. In addition the whole area is covered by a coco fabric to avoid erosion at rainfall. Some plants are already blooming. The work has been done accurate, with care with and a focus on the harmonic connection with natural environment. The Institute of Ecology is surprised by the already reached surprising results and compliments Glescherbahnen Kaprun for its work and commitment.
