KITZ CAMP – AN EMPLOYEE’S TEMPORARY HOME

The newly-built staff house "Kitz Camp" ensures satisfaction and relaxation also after work.

Restaurant and operations staff on the Kitzsteinhorn and Maiskogel make sure visitors and guests enjoy the varied recreational opportunities both mountains have to offer all year round. To the Gletscherbahnen Kaprun, employee satisfaction is as important as their guests’ well-being. The newly-built "Kitz Camp" provides a temporary home especially to international seasonal workers with no accommodation of their own within the region.

Unpack & feel home

Construction work on the modern building was completed in the fall of 2023. Architecturally, the Kitz Camp fits perfectly in the small residential area in the Häuslhofstraße road. On one side of the 14 housing units, fields extend all the way up to the Kaprun Castle, while the other side gives a view of the majestic workplace: the Kitzsteinhorn. Robert is one of the first Kitz Camp residents and is thrilled: "The 28-m²-large apartment is cozy and fully-equipped with bathroom, shower, toilet, kitchen, wall cabinets and dining table. I came here, unpacked and felt home, for even the dishes, cooking utensils and bed sheets were taken care of", tells the waitstaff member of the Gletschermühle restaurant while making himself a coffee in his kitchen before starting work and reading messages from his family in Croatia using the free Wi-Fi.

A few minutes later, Robert steps out his apartment door in his work uniform. He heads to the nearby town center on foot, where he takes the local bus to the valley station of the cable car route that brings him all the way up to his workplace in the Gletschermühle restaurant on 2,450 meters. At 5 p.m., he will be back home and "maybe go for a stroll on the Kaprun moors right outside the front door."

Even bed sheets and dishes were taken care of in the employee housing units.

Pioneering role in staff housing

The Kitz Camp is the youngest of three staff houses. "The first one was built in 2016", remembers Fritz Hüttner, deputy head of gastronomy and restaurant staff manager for the Kitzsteinhorn. "It had been one of my main objectives for a long time to create housing especially for international seasonal workers. In 2016, we finally accomplished that by handing the keys to the staff apartments in the "Team Camp" near the Tauern SPA to our employees. We really took on a pioneering role at the time by doing so. Today, we can offer comfortable and modern apartments for 52 people during the season. More often than not, seasonal jobs turn into permanent positions over the years. In that case, employees look around for a housing of their own in the region." All staff houses are centrally located for all important facilities to be reached on foot. And for longer distances, both the ski bus and the bus line 660 to Zell am See are at their private disposal.

Arriving, unpacking and feeling home. Here, you can really look forward to your temporary home after work.

Decisive factor in choosing a job

Fritz Hüttner knows how valuable a well-rested and happy employee is for the company and says: "We really focus on well-equipped and well-furnished apartments. Ground-floor apartments feature gardens, the others on the above floors balconies. Those who come home from a night shift can darken their bedroom for a good "day’s" sleep." Investing in housing for employees pays off eventually, asserts Hüttner: "Many employees join our team via other employees. Besides the job itself and salary, housing is definitely a decisive factor. And employees who are happy within their own refuge, will transfer that happiness to their workplace, too."

At the end of the season, Robert happily packs his suitcase and shuts the door behind him, for he knows that after a summer spent in his homeland Croatia, a comfortable "temporary home" in the Kitzsteinhorn staff houses will be awaiting him again the next season.
