SUMMER 2026

Nature and Panoramic Pleasures on the Border of the Hohe Tauern National Park

Anyone exploring Kitzsteinhorn and Maiskogel in the Zell am See-Kaprun region in summer can look forward to an exceptional variety of landscapes, sports, and nature experiences. The journey takes you from the town of Kaprun all the way up to glacier ice at 3,000 meters. Along the way, you’ll find scenic hiking and bike routes, action-packed mountain bike trails, spectacular panoramic cable car rides, unique sightseeing destinations, adventure playgrounds, modern alpine mountain restaurants, and quaint alpine huts.

HIKING

The MK Maiskogelbahn takes hikers of all ages comfortably from Kaprun’s town center up to the top station – the ideal starting point for a wide range of tours and loop hikes. From here, you can reach Kitzsteinhorn either on foot via the scenic Alexander Enzinger Trail or by panoramic cable car ride: the 3K K-onnection offers spectacular views from snow-covered peaks all the way down to sparkling Lake Zell. And at Kitzsteinhorn, an equally varied hiking paradise awaits.

LANGWIEDEasy Hiking Area at 2,000 Meters

  • 2C Alpine Rose Trail
The short loop trail starts at Häuslalm and leads past rolling hills covered in alpine roses, lush green alpine meadows with bubbling streams, and back to the starting point at Langwied.
  • 2D Häuslalm Trail
This easy loop trail begins at Häuslalm and follows gently rolling terrain through lush alpine-rose meadows, past an old shepherd’s ruin, and along Grubbach stream through beautiful natural scenery. Along the way, a viewpoint with a bronze marmot family makes the perfect photo spot for a short pause before the trail leads back to the starting point.
  • 41D Hirterboden Trail
This wide loop trail starts at Häuslalm and passes several spots with stunning views over the Zell Basin before reaching an old shepherd’s ruin. The trail is especially suitable for families with toddlers and includes designated rest areas.

ALPINCENTERHigh-Alpine Hiking Area at over 2,500 Meters

  • 41A Panorama Trail Glacier View
This easy loop hike starts at the Alpincenter and leads up to the glacier moraine with wonderful views of Schmiedingerkees, the glacier lake, Zefertgraben, and the Zell Basin. The short loop includes some rocky terrain and requires sure-footedness.
  • 41B Glacier Lake Hike
From the Alpincenter, this loop first follows the initial section of the 41A Panoramaweg Gletscherblick across high-alpine terrain over the moraine to the emerald-green glacier lake, past glacially polished rock and crystal-clear streams, and finally back to the Alpincenter.
  • 41C Rettenwand Loop Hike
Starting from the Alpincenter, the trail leads to interesting geological rock formations at the foot of Tristinger and Rettenwand. From the viewpoint at Graswandkreuz, you return to the Alpincenter via the Panorama Trail Glacier View.
  • 5 Alexander Enzinger Trail
This challenging high route for experienced hikers links Kitzsteinhorn and Maiskogel and can be hiked from either side. Start and end points are the top station of the MK Maiskogelbahn on Maiskogel and the Alpincenter or Häuslalm at Kitzsteinhorn. Narrow, exposed sections require sure-footedness and good weather. The trail through the impressive high-mountain landscape offers fantastic views all the way down to the Zell Basin.

MAISKOGEL Relaxed Family Hiking Area Above Kaprun

  • 25 Maiskogel Hut Tour
Take the MK Maiskogelbahn from Kaprun’s town center up to the top station, the starting point of the hut loop. The route links the traditional huts and alpine pastures on Maiskogel into a relaxed loop hike for the whole family. Rustic huts along the way invite you to take a break with local specialties. The mostly level trail leads through a mystical forest landscape and offers breathtaking views. At the Maiskogel Alm Ranch, there’s even a petting zoo.
  • 33 Maiskogel Service Road
Starting at Schulstraße, head uphill along Schaufelbergstraße to the Vorderweißstein livestock gate. Turn right to the Stangerbauer livestock gate, then turn right again onto the Maiskogel service road. Pass the Almlift base station, continue uphill past the Maiskogel pump station, and follow the road to Maiskogel.
  • 35 Maiskogel Forest Trail
The trail starts opposite the main school. Follow Schaufelbergstraße to the first switchback, then continue straight to the Ortlehen farm. Turn right toward the Vorderweißstein farm. Here the trail branches off to the right, continues through a stone lane, passes the Almlift base station on the left, and joins the Maiskogel service road. After about 200 m, turn left; after 150 m, take the narrow, not-too-steep trail on the right. It climbs uphill in switchbacks through dense forest and clearings back to the Maiskogel service road, then turn left to reach Maiskogel.
